Enhancing the food delivery tracking experience for LINE MAN users through iOS Live Activities.

Food delivery services rely heavily on timely status updates. When customers order food, they want to know: has the restaurant received my order? Is my food being prepared? Where is my rider? How long until my food arrives? In early 2023, our team at LINE MAN Wongnai identified an opportunity to leverage Apple's new Live Activities feature to provide real-time delivery updates directly on the iPhone lock screen and Dynamic Island.

Design Process

A collaborative journey from concept to implementation.

Research & Ideation

After Apple announced iOS 16 with Live Activities at WWDC, our UX team immediately began exploring how we could enhance the food delivery experience with this new feature. We analyzed user pain points during the waiting period and identified opportunities to reduce anxiety and improve transparency.

User Journey Mapping

We mapped the entire delivery journey to understand how Live Activities could integrate with our existing flow. From "Finding your rider" to "Arrived at destination," each step was analyzed to identify where real-time updates would add the most value.

Prototyping & Testing

Our team created multiple design iterations and conducted guerilla testing with users. We tested different language options and visual elements to find the most intuitive and helpful presentation of delivery status information.

Collaboration with Engineering

Working closely with iOS engineers, we refined our designs to work within technical constraints. We created detailed specifications and worked pixel-by-pixel to ensure the implementation matched our vision while being technically feasible.

Launch & Iteration

Live Activities launched with close monitoring of user engagement metrics. We continued to refine the experience based on real-world usage data and user feedback, making ongoing improvements to the feature.

Space Constraints

The limited space in Dynamic Island and lock screen notifications required us to prioritize the most critical information and use visual hierarchy effectively.

Language & Tone

Finding the right voice and tone to communicate delivery status updates in a way that was clear, friendly, and reduced user anxiety.

Dark Mode Support

Ensuring our design worked seamlessly in both light and dark modes, maintaining legibility and brand consistency across all contexts.

Device Compatibility

Creating adaptable designs that worked across different iPhone models, from the compact view on standard iPhones to the Dynamic Island on iPhone 14 Pro.

The Solution

A seamless real-time tracking experience that reduced anxiety and improved user satisfaction

Our final implementation of Live Activities addressed key user needs while working within technical constraints. We created a system that provided real-time, glanceable updates throughout the entire delivery journey. We designed the experience to be conversational and empathetic, using language that resonated with users and reduced anxiety. The visual design maintained clear hierarchy of information, making status updates immediately understandable even at a glance. The solution worked across different iPhone models, adapting from full lock screen presentations to the compact Dynamic Island format without losing clarity or functionality.
